TIMARU SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

An ordinary meeting of the Timaru School Committee was held hist evening m the Board Boom, Main School. MESIBBBS PRESENT. Mr James Bruce (m the chair), the Bey. W. Gillies, and Messrs Jacob Hill, William Jones, and William Ingram (Hon. Sec.) MIHTTTKa. The minutes of lost ordinary, and of a special meeting were read and confirmed. COBBBBFONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows :— From the mistress of the Side School, asking for a ball frame, and that a map might be changed, and stating that the roll muster was — girls 74, boys 65, total 139 j the average attendance 105*4, and highest 119. From Mr James Scott, stating that he had written to the Board explaining his position, and desiring to know what arrangement was to' be made with him till the newly-appointed Head Master (Mr Wood) arrived. Aaho had received no reply from the Board, he thus laid the matter before the Committee. The Committee decided to soe to this question at once. From the Head Mistress, reporting that Ihe attendance for the past quarter had beeu bad, especially m the lower Standards, owing to sickness. The roll number for the month had been 254, average 199.2, and highest 221. She begged the Committee to get a pane of glass put m one of the windows at once. From Mr S. Davies, Secretary to the South Canterbury Caledonian Society, with reference to the Scholarship to be given by the Society. On the motion of the Rev. Mr Gillies, seconded by Mr Hill, it was resolved—" That this Committee express their worm appreci' ation of this effort of the Caledonian Society to encourage secondary education, and request the Head Master to intimate the echolarship to the pupils, and endeavor tc get as many competitors to come forward as possible."— Carried unanimously. From the Education Board, stating thai the Committee's recommendation re Heac Master and sixth teacher had been adoptet by the Board, From Mibs E. A.
