Timmu. Herald Office, Saturday Evening. AUCTIONEERS' REPORTS. Messrs Jonas and Bourn report for the past week as follows : — Oh Monday th6y held their usual sale at pleasant Point, when upwards of eleven thousand sheep and one hundred and eighty head of cattle, one hundred and sixty pigs were penned. Aa might be expected when such a large quantity of stock was to be submitted there was a first-rate attendance of both dealers, butohers and farmers, and it speaka well for the importance that these monthly sales have assumed that both buyers and sellers meant to do business, the former being sure from the large number and variety of entries that they could piok up just what they required, and the latter to the fact that the large number of pnrohaaers present would not let any line go below its market value or if they could see a shade to be made by its turn over. The auctioneer's task, a3 is usual at these sales, was a pleasant one, bids coming briskly, and there being no lack of competition for any lino. The accommodation for stock has once more been proved inadequate for the requirements of so important a stock-raising district, and though all possible care had been taken to erect temporary pens yet some inconvenience was necessarily felt. They sold 664 crossbred ewes at 7s 9d, 250 at 10s, and 321 at 10s 3d ; half-bred ewe 3 were placed at 8s for 120, 110 at 10s, 60 at 11s, and 100 at 12s 3d. A line of 520 half-bred and crossbreds went at 8s (3d, 640 merino ewes sold at 4s 2d, 268 at ss, and 962 at 6s 6d. For half and crossbred lambs from 6s to 7s 6d was obtained, viz., 225 at 6s. 19a at 7s, 205 at 7s 6d, and 370 at Bs. A line of 372 crossbred hoggets realised 10s 9d. Fat wethera suffered on l»te rates, 250 selling at from 11s ld to lls 9d ; 30 long-wool rams realised from . one to two guineas each. In cattle fat cows sold at up to £7 10s, steers .£6 6s, 9 forward steers and heifers at from £i 2s 6d to <£5 2s 6d, 33 heifers at from £Z to ,£4, 5 springers from ,£3 7s 6d to £5, 5 cows at .£2 to .£4 123 6d, 31 steers at £3 to £3 3s 6d, 6 yearlings at ,£l los, and 7 calves at from 15s to 225, 60 pigs were placed at from 10s to 12s for weanera, to 203 and 26a for young 1 stores. A line of 100 pigs were submitted close to the railway station, not having accommodation at the yards for classifying them. This line was postponed till next sale. The Ram Fair on Tuesday brought forward a worn out and inferior lot, relieved here ' and there by a few of a better class. Considering tho evident desire shown by the farmers of Sonth Canterbury to improve their stock the wonder is that breeders have not given more attention to this market. Had better bred sheep been penned there would have been fewer entries turned out unsold. They were fairly succossfnl m placing those entrusted to them for sale. Some few lota evidently met with buyers' approbation from the keen manner m which they were competed for. They sold on behalf of Mr Wm. Grant 7 at 4*gs, sat -tigs ; on behalf of Mr Kelland 15 at 2J and 7 at l^gs ; on account of Mr Harry Bell Johnson's estate, 12 at from £ to 1 guinea eaoh, and on account of Mr R. Davie 15 at 1 guinea each. At Winchester Fair on Thursday there was a large amount of stock penned and a very fair attendance of buyers. They sold 300 crossbred lambs at 7s 9d, 198 ewes at 5s 6d, and 300 fat ewes at 12s, 149 merino wethers at 4s ld, and 402 aged ewes at 23 9d 9 steers at £6, and 11 at £Z 133 6d. Their usual fortnightly sale of wool and sheepskins was held on Wednesday, all the local buyers being present. A good catalogue was submitted, and full rates obtained. Merino skins sold at up to 4s Bd, lambs' to 2s 3d, and woolly pelts at up to 2s 3d, 1 bale black wool s.}d, 1 bale mixed 7|d, and 2 at Bd, 2 bales morino 7id, 2 bales lambs 6Jd, 1 bale crossbred o£d, dead wool s|d, and 1 bale washed pieces at 7Jd, locks and pieces at full current values. To-day about 20 entries of draught horses were made, all o£ inferior sorts. They sold ten at up to .£l2 each, also double-furrow ploughs, harrows, harness and contractor's plant at full market values. Stock sales by auction hay« prevented a large business being done m either sheep or cattle privately, but they have placed one line of 600 crossbred ewes at 10a, and a email lot of fat steers at £6 10s. At Pieasant Point on Monday they submitted on behalf of Mr Alphens Hayes 16 trucks of stakes, posts, strainers and mixed firewood, and are pleased to say that it realised bettor prices than haa been obtained for the last two sales. Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for tho past week as follows, viz. : — Sheep — Largo numbers of store sheep are at present being offered for sale at the different auction sales, and also a great quantity aro changing hands privately. Prices have suffered a considerable reduction, but m tho face of the large supplies of both fat and store sheep it seems to bo wiser to accopt ratos now_ offering than to hold on m tho expectation of values advancing. At their usual monthly sale held at Winchester last Thursday from 10,000 to 12,000 sheep were there yarded, and though a considerable number were passed m, a fair amount of business was done. Their entries consisted of about 800 merinos and 1500 crossbreds. They sold 700 merino ewes from 2s 4d to 2s sd, 150 crossbred lambs at from 6s 6d to 6s lOd. Privately they placed 650 half-bred ewes, 320 crossbred 2-tootha, and 450 three-quarter-bred ewes at satisfactory prices. Fat Sheep— They have sold privately a nice lino of about 300 three-quarter-bred ewe 3 and wethers at a price almost equal to 2d per lb, whioh is about the present value of prime mutton. Stud Rams — The annual ram sale wa3 held on the Show Grounds here on the 31st ultimo, and as already reported was fairly successful, the number entered being greatly m excess of former years. They entered a total of 530, and sold 257. Particulars of aale appeared m Wednesday's issue. Cattle and Horses— The market for this class of stock is but poorly represented at present, no good lines of either boing sent for sale, and there is little demand. Good beef is plentiful at abont 17s 6d per 1901 b. Property — At their rooms to-day, on account of the Registrar of the Supremo Court, thoy offered a, 300-acre farm near Goraldine, which was knooked down to the mortgagees at £1 per acre. They ako offered a freehold section m York street, Timaru, but did uot Gacceod m selling this property.
