BEACH VERSUS HANLAN.

(By Telegraph.) (Per steamer at Wellington). WEtLINOTON, April 4. The following is a description of the race between Hanlan and Beach. The articles of agreement stipulated that the competitors should be at the starting point between three and half-past three o'clock, and it was close upon the latter hour vrhen both men appeared on the scene and took up their stations for the race. William Beach, the champion, was lustily cheered as he went for a short preliminary, and with the exception of looking somewhat drawn about the face he seemed m excellent health and condition. His new shell " Jack Smith " carried him beautifully, and he may well be proud of her as she is one of the best skiffs Messrs Donnelly and Sullivan have ever turned out of their establishment. Her measurements are as follow : Length 31 feet, beam 10 and 4-Bth inches) depth 6 inches, and weight exactly 30 pounds. Hanlan also received an ovation on nearing the umpire's boat, which he returned m hi» usual airy manner, and then took his preliminary to the admiration of everyone on board. Sitting- m his boat mW hia guernsey he looked a different man to what he did when last . > - •its™-;'! B:-'o:i. H:; muscleß sto- i c." iv^no • "?-.it- e h .--.rl'T-c-r-*. Stroke for stroke the pair sped on their journey, and at Uhr's Point there was no apparent difference m their relative positions. Now, however, a change began, and inch by inch and foot by foot the nose of Beach's boat was seen to be slowly forging m front of Hanlan's, and the cheers that rang from the Champion* friends when tliiß advantage was an undisputed: fact will long be remembered. From Uhr** to the mile beacon the struggle was the grandest ever witnessed on the Parramatta, and at the end of the first mile there was an a (vantage of about half a boat's length m favor of the Champion. Hanlan now began to look very serious, while Beach on the other hand seemed to have a little left m him. Approaching Putney Beach still increased his advantage, and off the gasworks was nearly a length to the good. Hanlan was now m difficulties, and his rowing became faulty, while Beach looked as fresh and strong as a lion. Passing Qladesville the Champion led by a good length, and the shouts of joy and encouragement mußt have been gratifying " indeed to the Australian. From this point the race was virtually over, and although the Canadian stuck m the most determined manner to his man his strokes were rapidly becoming weaker and weaker, and 'so amidst, a perfect whirlwind of voices and acclamations of the wildest description, the flag was for the second time lowered proclaiming William Beach to be the champion sculler of the world.
