WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Waiuiato County Council waß held yesterday. i MEMBEES rHESENT. I Messrs Manchester (Chairman), Studholme, i Murphy, Douglas, Turnbull, Elworthy, and i Hardie. ' MINUTES. ] The minutes of last meeting were con- i firmed. i COEEE3PONDENCE. I The following correspondence was read : — ; From Mr J. M. Miller, Hakatcramea . Downs, asking for the formation of about 10 chains of road, from Hakatcrnmea Pass road near Dalgotty Creek, to Hakateramea river, to connect the road now surveyed to the coal i pit m Mackenzie County. From Mr L. A Macphei'son, again asking i for the road to bo mado over a narrow spur : m section 30126, and asking if thore was any probability of a road being mado through Mrs Ross* section (28372) connecting the ] Hakateramea Valley road with the Upper Waitaki Bridge, so as to avoid the route via Sandhurst. From Mr J. Bartos, asking for the outlay of a small sum to form a footpath m Exeter street, Parsonage padriock. From the Public Works Office, informing that the Minister approves of tho workß proposed by the Council for construction under the Roads nnd Bridges Act, with tho grant of £1710, and consents to tho grant being dealt with under section 18 instead of under sections 12 to 15, provided the Council expends its one-fourth share of £1710 out of its own funds on these works instead of repayment by ten annual instalments. The grant will thus bo £1282, tho County to provide £428. This arrangement is n substitute for, and m lieu of, the allocation of the grant mentioned m letter of 17th December last. From the same, informing that tho Miuister had issued on the 20th ultimo his certificate for tho grants to the County Treasurer for road works, £1057. From tho Hospital steward, with £14 16s 9d, received by him as subscriptions from Station Peak to Special Fund to obtain articles of comfort for patients m Waimate Hospital. From Mr B. G. Baxter, expressing surprise at the services of his brother being so sud- • donly dispensed with by the Council. Mr H. Baxter had been engaged 'as a cadet, but the papers, although long ready for signature, had never been signed on behalf of the Council. Ho considered it fair the Council should allow compensation to Mr H. Baxter under the circumstances. From Mr A. M. Clarke, Temuka, stating that ho will accept no responsibility for any damage which may be caused by the Esk Creek should the Council divert it as agreed to by Mr Sutherland and himself, excepting so far as the Esk Bank estate iB concerned. From Mr Hayes apologising for absence from tho Council meeting. BEPOETB. The Engineer's report was read. The only important matters referred to were tho bad state of a bridge near Waikokahi ; and a re commendation that the proposed now road from Dog Kennel Creek to Waihao river near O'Brien Bros.' farm, be formed m parts, as the circumstances of tho ground require. He also suggested that the Council apply for a few of the five acre sections of the Govern- ! ment reserve, Waitaki, for gravel supply. The Hospital Surgeon's report showed the number of patients admitted during the month — Out-patients, 12 ; under treatment at date of last return, 8 ; total treated, 22 ; discharged cured, 4 ; relieved, 1 ; died, 1 ; remaining under treatment, 4. MISCELLANEOUS. The following resolutions wore passed by the meeting: — "..That tho road applied for :by Mr Miller, of Hakateramea bo formed, the expense not to exceed £ — ;" " That the road through Boss's section, as mentioned m Mr McPherson's letter, be attended to, tho expense to bo limited to £ — ;" " That Mr , Bartos' application for a footpath cannot be entertained ;" " That the Council, after considering Mr Baxter's complaint re his brother leaving the Coimty Council's service, and . hearing the Engineer's explanation, regret Mr ' Baxter does not see the matter m its true light, tho dispensing with Mr H. Baxter's services being caused by there being no suitable employment for him, and his longer con- ( tinuance m the Council's employment would be a waste of his time." • A motion was proposed by Mr Elworthy — "That the Council without admitting uny liability for future maintenance, will construct a boulder crossing on the N.Z. and A.L. Company's property, Pareora, as applied for by Mr Macpherson, the cost not to exceed '. On boing put by the Chairman, the motion was lost, only tho mover and seconder (Mr ' Douglas) voting for itResolved — " That tho Council with the view of meeting Mr McLean's application as far as lies m their power at present, authorise the Engineer to prepare plans and specifications for the removal of natural obstructions to traffic, at a cost not to exceed £ — ." " That ■ the Engineer be. instructed to have tho Waimate Gorge Creek cleared to prevent damage to the road line by which it passes ;" " That the i bridge mentioned m tho Engineer's report as being m a dangerous state near Mr McLean's be repaired forthwith ;" " That m reply to application re the diversion of Esk Creek, this Council regrets not seeing its way to undertake the work, and that a copy of this resolution be sent to the applicants ;" " That Mrs Johnston be • informed that the land applied for by hor is a railway — not a county — reserve, and that the engineer indicate the reserves that should be exchanged and the . land to bo asked for m lieu of those not suitable for gravel reserves." In tho absence of Mr Hayes, Mr Douglas was authorised to sign the Council's cheques. TENDERS. The tender, of G. Hicks, £120, for contract No. 573, was accepted, and it waa resolvod ' that fresh tbndors bo called for contracts Nos. 541 and 574. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts wero passed for payment :— On general account, £317 7s lid ; deposits retiu-ned, £4 ; Hospital, £60 19s 6d. The Council then adjourned.
