(By Telegraph.) Auckland, March 25, . The Hinemoa left the Manukau with His Excellency the Governor this afternoon. ~ Thames, March 25. A letter received from Mr Charles Lawlor of the Wild Duck cruising party, who -were lately m the neighborhood of the Engineer Group, south-east of New Guinea, gives particulars of cannibal atrocities perpetrated about New Year's Day on the island of Wornworngay. William Bead, manager of the copra station at Bently Island, was gathering copra, when the natives, instigated by a Chinaman, attacked him. Bead made a ran* ning fight as he endeavored to regain his boat but was shot down, and the mnrderere cut off his head and ate his body. A missionary from Test Island proceeded to Bentley Island prepared to arrest the miscreants, but Me Cord, deceased's mate, was too debilitated to take any measures, and it was thought better to allow a man-of-war to take up the case. Mabton, March 25. An eight-roomed house belonging to Messrs Ferguson and Dundas was burned to the ground near Kokarika yesterday. The origin of the fire is unknown. Wellington, March 25. One of the Government measures to be presented next session is a Bill to consolidate the existing native land laws. Mr B. H. Taylor, boatbuilder, was to-day committed for trial on a charge of perjury. The offence was committed. in connection with pawning a quantity of clothing and handing a man named Barron the ticket m liquidation of a sporting wager. Subsequently Taylor visited the pawnbroker and told him he had lost the ticket but wanted to redeem the goods. Taylor filled up a declaration to the effect that the ticket was lost, and upon such declaration the case rests. A man named Thos. Cahill has been committed for trial for burglary. Dra Grabham and Giles, who held an inquiry into the admittance of a puerperal fever patient into the Wellington Hospital last month, have reported at length. Their report enters into fall details of the case, but. does not blame anyone m particular for the unfortunate casualty. They recommend vorious ways which would prevent a recurrence of the affair. ; Chbistchubch, March 25. An offer has been made by a number of residents of Lyttelton to form a battery of artillery m that seaport.
