Melbourne, March 12. i Mr Sargood, Defence Minister, has approved the proposal to invite Royal •■ Navy officers to offer for service m connection with local defences. 1 Conaiderable anxiety is expressed here regarding the present unprotected slate of Albany, West Australia. (Recoived 2.45 p.m., Maroh 12th.) i Extra naval precautions are being taken here, and the forces will ' probably be materially augmented without delay. Attention, however, is being given to the use of torpedoes for defensive purposes (By Telegraph.)

Auckland, March 12, At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce 1 Executive Committee to-day, a resolution was 1 carried urging the Government to take im--1 mediate action for the defence of ' Auckland! 1 The resolution will come up for ratification at 1 a meeting of tho Chamber to-morrow.
