CORRESPONDENCE.
THE SCHOLAESHIP EXAMINATIONS. TO THE. EDITOR OF THE TIMARTJ HERALD. SIE, — As a contribution to the discussion of the beet time for holding the scholarship examinations, let we state the real facts of tho case. When these scholarships were instituted there was no High. 'School m Timaru, and so the question .of convenience for winners attending that institution did not need to be considered. It was therefore quite immaterial when the, examinations wore held, as the winner just got his money and his education all the same. But the matter; is altogether different now. The winner cannot begin the year at the High School, and so loses a whole term's marks, which prevents his position relative to others for the year being determined, besides being a loss to him educationally. It is true that the Chairman of the Board of Education . originally proposed that the examinations should be held earlier m the year, but that was objected to because it left a very short time between the announcement of the scholarships ' and the competition for them ; so that only the knowing ones who had been preparing before the annouricement'would have a chance. He then graciously consented to their postpone* ment till March, but " not a day later," and it is matter of history why not a day later. That time was fixed m tho interests of one ; let the interests of education, and not of persons, how be considered. I am glad to tee that our new Inspector is 'not going to play the part of Mr Maceycopbant, but it deter*
mined to let his influence be felt on the side of promoting tho best interests of education, irrespective of persons and parties. I am, &c, . Joxathan Syntax.
