It is announced that Germany has assumed a protectorate over the territory hitherto held by the Colonising Society, situated to the westward of Zanzibar, on the African coast. (Special xo the Press Association.) (Received 1 p.m., March 4th.) London, March 3. Messrs Young and Lark, Australian merchants who filed some time ago, have made an offer of 15s m the £, m monthly payments extending over 'a period of two years, on the balance of debts due by them. Thiß offer has been accepted by most of the creditors. Prince Bismarck complains that the Blue Book issued on New Guinea contains confidential despatches. Speaking m the Reichstag he warned the members that if they opposed his colonial policy he would appeal to the country. The proposal to establish a Bishopric m Fiji has been abandoned. Mr Gladstone is at present confined to his room by a feverish cold. The German Press state that Earl Granville is sowing seeds of distrust between France and Germany. [Roceived 2.45 p.m., March 4th.] The Melbourne Harbor Trust's steamer Gannet, which has been laid up at Malta for repairs for a considerable time past, has sailed for Melbourne.
