MACKENZIE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of this Council was held at the County Office, Burkes Pass, on Monday, Feb. 2nd. . MBKBBHS' PEB9ENT. Messrs McGregor (Chairman), Milne, Rutherford, Struthers and Cowan. EBPOBT. i The Clerk and Engineer's report for the month of January was read, and the following resolution passed m connection with it — "That the fixed deposits maturing during the present month be re-deposited with the Bank of New Zealand for a furthr term of twelve months m five sums of £1000 each." COBBEBPOKDENCE. : ' From Mr Jt MoPherson Miller with regard to the construction of a road to a coal pit m the Hakateranoea Valley. The Engineer stated that he had seen the Chief Surveyor on this subject, who informed him that a road line would shortly be surveyed m accordance with Mr Miller's application. • From Captain Sutter, M.H.8., saying be would lay the case of the Mount Cook track before the Minister of Lands, and endeavor to obtain a grant from the Government for the purpose of completing it. From the Geraldine County Council, stating that the road beside the boundary between the Geraldine and Mackenzie Counties was not within their boundary, and therefore cannot be dealt with, by them. • Resolved — "That the Engineer obtain a legal opinion on this subject, and that m the event of the opinion being favorable to the Mackenzie Council's case, a test case be instituted m a Court of law with the object of finally deciding the matter." From the Treasury, stating that the sum of £363 had been paid to the Council's credit m the Bank of Now Zealand, Timaru, being a grant m aid under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act for works on the Main Mackenzie raad. From Mr McMillan, stating the amended terms on whigh he would consent to an alteration being made m his lease enabling the Council to declare tho Tekapo bridge ftee of toll. Resolved — " That the Council cannot accept the conditions offered by Mr McMillan." From Mr Askin, applying for the construction of a road from' the Mount Neseing road to the Rocky Gully. Resolved — " That m view of the considerable ' cost of the work applied for, and the good road communication already existing m that heighborhood, the work cannot be undertaken at present. LOOSR TVIBE ON BOADS. . Resolved— 7" That the owners of a property near! Fairlie Creek be requested to remove the wire broken out of the fences, from the public roads bounding the property." • ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £122 6s lid were passed for payment, and the Council adjourned.

The squad was under the command of Captain Wright, Captain Newall, District Adjutant, superintending, while Sergt.-Major Finn had charge o£ the marker's butt) The ranges »nd conditions were — at 200 standing, at 300 kneeling, and at 400 yards any military position ; 6 shots at each range ; regulation targets and scoring.
