CORRESPONDENCE.
9 GENERAL GORDON. 1 TO THE EDITOR OP THE TIMARU HERALD. t Sib, — Allow me to point out what appears to me an error m your 'article to-day on General Gordon's despatches. The length of > time he actually held out after penning his despatch of 14th December was forty-three ' days, he having been killed on the 27th <■ January. The relief force under Major Wilson reached Khartoum on 28th January, l and its warm reception by the rebels is now 1 a matter of history. Thoroughly sympathising with the tone of your article, I feel assured that the brave and ■ unparalleled struggles of these six weeks will long remain a monument of tho highest and purest impulses of humanity, and a sad though heroic ending of one of the brightest and best of our age. I am, &c., Obsekyeb. Timaru, 25th February, 1885.; [Our correspondent is correct.— Ed. T.H.]
