[By Telegraph.] Wellington, July 8. Albert Kemp, mate of the English barque Hudson, was charged with refusing to assist a police constable who was arresting some disorderly sailors on board the Hudson. The jury found the accused guilty, with a strong 1 recommendation to mercy on the ground of its being his first offence. The jury expressed the opinion that the constable should have asked for the officer on board. His Honor said m hie opinion tho defendant was guilty of a serious breach of duty, both as one of the Queen's eubject*and as an officer of the ship. It was absolutely necessary to mark the case as one deserving of very severe cenBure m the course of justice, and his judgment, was that the defendant forfeit £20 to Her Majesty forthwith, and m default of payment he be imprisoned for one calendar month, unless the fine be sooner paid. At the Supreme Court to-day W. H, Monkton was found guilty of making a false declaration under the Marriage Act, and sentence was deferred. Alice Lynch pleaded guilty to a similar offence, and will .be brought up to-morrow for sentence. Chhistchttkch, July 8. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court , closed to-day. Francis John Ormond, accused of stealing from M. Harris and Son, and Mark Bolls, accused of receiving the goods knowing them to be stolen, were acquitted. George Hamil, charged with forgery, had his trial postponed, m consequence of the prosecutor having disappeared. DcNbdik, July 8. At the Supreme Court to-day, Mary Masspy was acquitted, and Maria Scanlan convicted on a chargo of receiving stolen proporty. 1 Sentence on the latter was deferred. Thos. Flynn was found guilty of perj ury, committed ■ m the R.&I. Court at Polmerston South. He brought an action there to recover £40 from i Mrs Brown, a widow, who is an hotel-keeper, and swore that he gave her £20 m cash to , keep for him, and that she also detained a ' cheque of the value of £20. It was proved that Mrs Brown got no cash from him, and . that she gave him change for the cheque m full. Sentence was deferred, pending the . decision of the Court of Appeal on a point of [ law reserved. The case against Stewart i McComb for Bhcep-stealing at Lawrence occupied all the afternoon, and at the adjournment threo witnesses for the Crown remained to bo examined, tho jury being locked up all night.
