An agitation is being got up m the Wai.kato to induce the reeontly formed Coaperalivo Association to establish butchers' shops m Auckland. Captain MeKenzie'a motion to reduce the depth of water on the Bill of tho dock from 33 feet to 30 feet, and to lengthen it from 500 to 600 feet, was rejected by tho Harbor Board. An outbreak of fire occurred early this morning at Robert "Veale's grocery warehouse Theatre Royal Buildings, but was soon suppressed. On examination, a packing case on a shelf showed remnants of matches, and tho debris of three nests of mice. Tho new harbor dredge was ordered by the outgoing mail from Simon of Glasgow. Tho stone is very rich, showing good gold all through. A fire occurred at Appleby last night, by which a largo dairy, tho property of Mrs Knight, was completely destroyed. At their quarterly meeting, tho Chamber of Commerce appointed Messrs Chrystall and Mears to represent them at the Conference of Chambers, to bo held at Wellington next month. The President m his address attributed the depression here partly to overbuilding, and stated that, roughly speaking, about a quarter of a million had been expended m the city during the past threo years m building now stores, hotels, banks and factories. He recommended farmers to turn their attention to producing feed for live stock, as wheat growing, especially on light lands would not pay. OAMABtr, May 28. A deputation from tho Waimate County Council waited on tho Waitaki County Council to-day with reference to tho completion of the Upper Waitaki bridge. It was stated by the deputation that £7000 would complete tho bridge, but it was pointed out that Messrs Barr and OUiver, late Engineers to tho Waitaki Council, and Mr Hillary, Engineer to the Waimate Council, had estimated the probable cost at over £12,000. Tho deputation wished tho Waitaki County Council to join •with tho Waimato County m making an application undor the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, but it was pointed out that Waitaki County had already arranged to mako an application under tho Act for £6000 for other -works, and if any further applications wore made it would be likely to interfere with this.
