Stevens, Secretary of the New Zealand Rille Afsjciation, haa received the following letter, dnted Sydney, Bth May : — " It has been decided that the next prizo meeting of this Association -shall be held during the week ending 25th October next, and at which a match between teams from each of the AustraHin colonies and New Zealand will be placed on the programme. I am directed by my Council to inform you. of the same, and iuvite your Association to Bend a team to take part therein. Two seamen belonging to the Victory were fined £5 and £10 respectively, for assaulting the chief engineer of the steamer. Last night a twelve-roomed house at Wakapuaku, belonging to Mr W. Wastney, was burnt to the ground, together with a carriagehouse, etc. The buildings were insured for £650 and the furniture for £450, both m the South British. A fire broke out this afternoon m a sevenrooined houso m Brook street, owned and occupied by Mr W. Lockey, cab proprietor, during tho absence of the family. Tho upper rooms were completely destroyed, but the lower ones were saved, and the furniture from the latter was got out. The building was insured for £150 m the South British, and the furniture for £100 m the Australian Mercantile. A dreadful accident occurred this afternoon to a little son of Mr H. D. Jackson, aged ten. He was leading a horse to a paddock to tether him out, when the rope became ontaugled round his leg. Tho horse bolted and dragged the boy eomo distance. When picked up the flesh and skin from the calf was found stripped off and pulled over the heel on to the sole of the foot. Three doctors have been with the boy and have sewn up the flesh. At Palmeraton Resident Magistrate's Cotirt to-day a charge was brought against a schoolmaster namod Warburton of ill-treating a boy named Ross, ten years old. The boy had been accused of tclUng a falsehood, and tho toacher first made him kneel and beg a boy's pardon j then he hoisted him on another boy's baok and strapped him ; then he made I tho boy " ride- tho donkey," that is, tho boy was plnced n stride a desk and made to leap along it, and was flogged ovory timo he jumped. Ono boy saidhe counted 38 strokes thus inflicted, but it was denied that there wore so many. Tho Magistrate (Mr Robinson) dismissed tho case, saying that he could not think it such on excess of severity as would compel him to put defendant m the position of a criminal.
