A LUMPERS STRIKE.
Auckland, May 27. The Auckland lnmpers belonging to the New Zealand Lumpers' Union, are now " ou Brike." Captain Scotland, of the Crusader, asked several Union men to assist m discharging his ship yesterday. He wished to Work them m company with his own crew, but they would do all the work or none. The lumpers base their action oa one of the Union rule 3, which is as follows : — " That members shall not work aboard any foreign ship with sailors, either louling or discharging. Any member committing said offence shall be fined 10s for the first offence, and for a second offence shall be expelled from tho Union." Captain Scotland resisted tha Union's dictation, and although tho lnmpers are said to be 300 strong , he found no difficulty m securing a sufficient number of men to enable him to proceed with discharging. Thus he was put to little or no inconvenience. The President of the Lumpers' Union had several interviews with Captain Scotland, but they all came to nothing, as the latter gentleman had made r.p his mind as to the course he would pnrsne, viz., to go on \rith his work despite the Lumpers' Union. The ma <ters of other vessels m harbor have decided to do their utmost to assist Captain Scotland, an 1 so far have agreed that they would do all m their power to get their work dove wi:hout the assistance of onion men. The captain of the Deva, to be berthed to-day, will follow m Captain Scotland's footsteps, and had it not been for some hitch m the arrangements, tho Union S.S. Company wonld nave dispensed with the services of the luaipers m the discharge of tho To Anau y ;sterday. The Lumpers' Union held a mootng to discuss the situation.
