CARBINE SHOOTING.

Yesterday afternoon the men belonging to the 0. Battery of Artillery fired for the silver cup lately presented to them for competition by Mes»rs Bower and Fergnsoa, watchmakers and jewellers of this town. No less than twenty artillerymen turned ont to take part m the contest, viz : — Quarter- Master Sergeant J. King, Sergeant A. Jackson, Corporal W. Hughes, Bombardier R. Wangh, and Gunners Walts, Sterenson, Hill, Hitch, Burmeister, Morris, Hilton, C. Peters, Bryan, J. Ezley, T. Peters, G. Blli«, Rd. Campbell, J. Toneycliffe, A. Allen, and J. Bruca. The weather wm otherwise very favorable, bat the wind, all through the afternoon, though light was variable. The ranges wer» 200, 400, and 500 yard) ; lha conditions being fire shots at each range ; any military position allowed ; the targets being 6 x 4 at the 200 yds range, and 6x6 at the other ranges. The tcoring was very fair, but cannot by any means be called good, the highest score being only an average of centres. Sergeant A. Jackson, the winner, is a very reliable shot, and m the matches, etc., which have been fired by the Bittery, ha has always obtained one of the most prominent positions ; and hag more than once headed the list. The cup, m fact, could not have fallen into better hands, and Sergeant Jackson's many comrades are well content with his success. We may mention that he has been connected with volunteering for many years now, and woj formerly an officer m the cadet corps, which was a great institution here m the olden days. Gunner Godfrey Ellii>, who was the next highest scorer, was close up, but be opened his account very badly. He has also been connected with volunteering for a very long time, and is reckoned among the " orack shots" of tt.e Battery. Of the others, it is needless to go into details, for their scoring was very indifferent. Lieutenant Jackson had charge of the Battery and range, and conducted the affair systematically and with despatch. The following are particulars of the shooting, nil but the eiaht named having retired after firing at the 400 yds range : — 200 400 600 yds. yds. yds. Tl. Sergt. A. Jackson ... 15 16 14 45 Gunner G.
