THE WAIRARAPA-APELAIDE COLLISION.
(Per s.s. Wakatipa from Sydney.) Melbourne, (undated). A good deal of excitement was caused over the steamship nice between tfce Adelaide and tae Wairarapa. The Union boat had the lead at starting, bnt the Adelaide came ap to her, and the vessels rushed along at a tipeed of fourteen knots an hoar. The Adelaide then came up, and the speed was increased to sixteen knots. All was ext^itemsnt aboard both vessels, and a good deal of alarm waa exhibited by thu passengers. When, tbe West Channel light ship was passed, the Adelaide Lrtd been on the proper or eas-tern side of the the channel, and was driving ahead when the Waii'arapa steadily shifted her conrse, and by so doing canted her quarter on the Adelaide's starboard side with such severity, that •omo passengers on board were thrown out of their berth and some of tho bulwarks were lient. On board the position was 30 critical that the vessel had to go full speed astern, but subsequently again steamed ahead. The Wairarapa stopped, and almost as the snmc time a thick fog obscured all lights. The Wairarapa sent a boat to the Adelaide to ascertain the oitent of the damage done. It is understood t,he Steam Navigation Boa;d will hold an iuqniry.
