Through the courtesy of the Ispeotor of Police at Timaru, we are enabled to publiah the following [statistics relating tn the work af tlie Police Department m the Timaru d;stricl. for tbe year 1883. The Tirr.aru Police Disirioi. comprises tbe country between the Kukaia und Waitaki rivers, and thu return of offences therefore includes ull cases dealt with at the local stations a'ud Courts at liuiaru, Wuimate, Teaiuka, Qera'.dine, Ashbutton, and Bakaia. Assault* of *llkicds reported numbered 65, as against *99 m 1882. Embezzlements were 11, against 5 m tlie pievipus year. Larcenies of all kinds showed 'ft decrease for the yeur, being 102 m 1833 and 13^ m 1882. The number of lunatics, excluding those entered as lucatios from drink, numbered 39 la«t jear t 36 the year before —a large proportion for our population. In 1882 there were 123 cases of malicious injury to property; last year only 26.
