CORRESPONDENCE.

rUE MATAURA'B CARGO OF FROZEN MEAT. rO THE EDITOR OP THE TIMABU HERAXD. Sih, — I was unaware till I saw your paper of the 11th, that tho New Zealand public had before it the question of whether Auckland could breed sheep or not, for I had hitherto considered that community far too discerning to have over combatled the fact that Auckland can rear as good sheep as any province m the colony. Doeß tho word " public " mean your correspondent " Anti-land-Binga ?" He is responsible, however, for the statement that "tho question before the New Zealand public ia the simple onf, Can the farmers of the Auckland district breed »heep?" therefore I suppose euch is the ease. Now, Sir, I wish to state plainly, emphatically, and so that even your correspondent cannot misunderstand me, that tboAucklaad province can and does rear as good sheep as any other part of New Zealand. Your correspondent, from his questions, must surely think that I am a statistician, the manager of a Bank or Loan Company, or a private detective employed to trace tho lineßgo of overy Bheep sent home ia the Mataura. Allow me to iuform him that Ido not fill any of these proud positions. Now with regard to these said questions, the first he can easily get answered by applying to the Inspector of Sheep at Auckland. The second question, for obvious reasons, I cannot answer ; and I think your correspondent will havo come considerable difficulty m getting tho information he desires. Tho third question 1 can answer, but I won't, as it concern! my private business pure and simple, but if your correspondent will send me, through you, Sir, his name and addrefs, I will, if it seems worth while, be happy to give him any information, privately, I can on this point. Tho reason the visitor eoes what your correspondent calls continuous droves of sheep entering the Auckland district from tho souih thereof is that there is a demand for sheep m the provinco upon the properties which are not fully stocked up, and wherever there is a demand then the supply will naturally come. There was, a very short time ogo, a large export trade of sheep to Otago from Canterbury, but no «ane man would over give this as v reason and expect people to believe it, that Otago could not rear sheep. I myself can romember well when a great many sheep were imported into Canterbury year by year. And, to the final question, as I am not employed to trace the lineage of every sheep that went Home m the Mataura, I c»n give no answer. I can only say that for my own part I sent Home 600 sheep m her, and they were all born and bred m the district, their sires and dams being also bred on our' property there. lam torry to sea this wish on the part of — what shall wo call it ? — " the New Zealand public?" to try to asperse Auckland ; but she can take care of herself. But, Sir, for the life of mo I cannot see what all this has to do with tho Mataura's cargo going wrong, and as there appears to me to bo a question of far more importance than a petty assertion whioh cannot be Bub stantiated, I must deoliue further oorres' pondence until it is shown to me that the statement, or fact, if your correspondent chooses to cull it so, that " Auckland cannol raise sheep" has anything to do with a carg< of frozen meal from their arriving iv Londor m bad condition.
