THE HORSE PARADE.

The ansual parade of horses under the nspices of the Timaru Agricultural and 'astoral Association was held on tho Old Ihow Grounds, Elizabeth street, on Saturday torning las'. The weather \ra> fine, but :old, tho number of people present, — the nnjority of wh'-m were, a> uinsl, from the :ountry — was atout 150 at the close of the parade. Great disiippointment was rxpressed >n all sides at the small number of horses •ntercd, the total being but 19, as against 35 lait year. Tlie aclual number on the 'round was 17. Various reasons wero given for the poverty of the list, one ' being that co many sires had left ' the district, ond another (hat times ' were to bid that it does not pay to bring th» 1 horses into town, especially aa bad debts were tho rule for services last season. Whatever ' the real cause may be, it is none the less to be ' regretted that it should exist, for it it calcu- ' lated to difcou'age pereons m the district . from purcba«ing or breeding fir«t-d»»s »ire>, and owners of ilams from hunting for them. ( Considering the large number of draught marcs nnd geldinus whioh havo been shipped \ from Canterbury and Otigo to Bydnej l during the past twelve raonthe, and the J demand which still continues for them j on the other sirie, it would naturally , have been thought that an impetus would j have been given to the production of thi« does of stock, not only for export, but to fnpply l farmers' wants nearer home. There may be ' something behind of which we are not aware, • but the general impression seems to be thai the supply of really firet-cku draught entires ! m South Canterbury U far short of the de- . msnd, and I hat the deficiency will be supplied , by a lot of " woeds," to the detriment of all . concerned. Ti e horses whoae names appeared on the official card on Saturday were as follows :— ! DEAUOHT nOHSB9. I Mr M. Sludholmo's Time of Day, by i Prince Cbarlio, dam Je»e. , Mr Hobt. Malhews' Young Wellington, by , Wellington, dam Young Prido. I Mrßobt. Mathews' tftrathmore, by Glen- ; roy, dam Violet. , Mr Jas. Sullivan's Young Conqueror, by i Conqueror, d»m Miss Nightingale, i Mr J. McKerrow's The Teller, by Young ; Banker — Bell, by Blair's Champion. I Mr Ed. Evans' King James, by Young Banker, dam Mary Blanc. , Mr Boot. Dyne's Luck's All, by Young , Banker, dam Jess. I N.Z. and Australian Land Co.'s (Pareora i Eitats) Fitz James, by Roderick Dhu, dam 1 Blossom. ] TnOBOITOHBBHD HOB9BB. ; Mr E. H. Pearpoint's Daniel O'Rourke, by I bledmere, dam Brunette. I Mr B. H. Peirpoint's Jangler, by Tra- i ducer, dam Tantrums. i Mr A. Mithows' Betrayer, by Traducer, j darn Idalia (imported). , Mr J. 8. Rutherford's Ham, by Htedmere, dam Meg Morilees. Mr J. Brosnahan's Young Cajtiwty, by i Caslawsy, dam Kitty. ; N.Z. and A.L. Co.'s (Pareora Estnto) Flying Dutchman, by Peter Wilkins, dam Besistanc. Mr J. Holland's Discretion, by Detractor, dam Countess. Mr James King's Talisman, by Traduoar, dam Azucena. Mr G. H. Thompson's Cotberetone, by Cotherstone, dam Norali. PONIES. Mr M. A.Toomoy's Duke of Edinburgh. Mr — Munro's Tom Thumb. All the draughts and thoroughbreds put ia an appearance, but tho two ponies entered were noticeable by their absence. The first m the parade was Mr M. Studholme's Time of Day, a well-built animal of a bay color and promising appearance. Mr Robert Mathew* paraded a pair m the shape of Young Wellington and Strnt'.imore. The former was m good serviceable condition and attracted a large share of notice, having, if anything, improved during tbeyear. Stra'hmore is by Glenroy and is a dark chestnut with whitish mane and fetlocks. Mr Jas. Sullivan's Young Conqueror was as usual m capi'al form, and looks •• fit" for many a year to coma yet. His progeny speak for his worth. Mr J. C. MoKerrow'a entry, The Teller, is rather tmnll, but what one misses m size is almost made up for m his nuggety and compact appearance. The neit m the circle. Mr E. Evsns' King J»rae«, ia small •nrl light, but may improve with age. Mr Robert Dime's Luck's All is as near an appnach to perfection as owners of dams need seek for m a Clydesdale sire. Tlie lust on the list of draught horses was the N.Z. & A. Land Company* Filz James. The nine thoroughbred* entorod wero al! entored last yeir, with tbo exception of three, viz., Betrayer, Ihm, and Young Castaway, fhe first, to como under not ico were Mr B. | H. Pnarpoint's Diniel O'Rourke, and Jangler. Barh thesa horses are so well known m ths district that it is almost unnecessary to say anything about them. Of the two Janglor certainly looked the best, and was m really prims condition. Dan seemed to lack somo of his old fira, but had evidently been well looked after. Mr A. Mathew's Betrayer, though a new arrival m South Canterbury, U none ths lets well known for his past racing performances, and »s a son of Traducer and Idalia, should be greatly sought after. Mr J. S. Rutherford's Ham is a light built animal, by Sledmero. Young Castaway, entered by Mr J. Brosnahan, has many of the points of bU father, but. lacks the latter s spirit and action. The N.Z. and A. Land Company's Flying Dutchman attracted a great deil of attentim, and it is not likely will be passed by by those who desire racing stock.. Mr J. HnlUnd 9 Discretion again showed to alvantage, while Mr J. King's Talisman looked not a year older. At a carriage stallion he must still continue a favorite. The circle w»s completed by Mr G. H. Thompson's Ootherstone, who w»b shown m the best possible form. As we have already mentioned the two ponies entered, Diika of Edinburgh and Tom Thumb, were not on the ground.
