MAKIKIHI.

(From our Own Correspondent.) In consequence of the hard times which prevailed during the winter and the dulness of trade I thought it advisable to beep silent and await the chance of gome refreshing newt. Now that long days and fine weather have Bet m, I think I may venture to say that tbir,ga are looking a little more favorable. The crops teem a little more backward than m previous years, owing to the fact that many farmers were late m lowing. On account of tha wet winter which we experienced fine sunshiny weather is much wanted for agricultural purposes. The latest improvement m oar township is a new saddler and ironmonger's shop for Mr A. Maxwell, of Waimate. It has a very neat appearance externally, and the interior is well laid out. The shop is well stocked with both harness and ironmongery, and I must ray be has always the means of "raising the wind," for he has an excellent line m bellows. The hotel has just undergone a process of renovation, and is now capable of supplying firßt-class accommodation. The meeting of the County Harriers Club which was to have been held on Monday evening last fell through, only one or two members showing up. Great indignation exists among some of our local race Committeemen towards the members of the T.T.J.O. for their action iD ,

ndnpting the day on which our nnnual race have been held for the lnet threo yeara, and some of the members of the club express their determination of holding a meting on the usml d>iy, despite the efforts of their Timaru friond?. Tho Makikihi raccfl were beginning to be » aucrcs, and were looker! forward to by many sporting mpii. I hope tbo Committeo ■»i'l curry theis intentions to a successful end, ami that we (hall hove a cood meeting.
