After several condemnatory speeches had been made the following resolution was carried unanimously — •' That the Masterton Volunteers, after the treatment received from Major Bunny on Thursday last, tender their resignation m a body." A Norwegian named Gabrielson, who deeerted from the ship Oxford, on board which ho wa3 employed as a sailmaker, was found on the beach at Ohauri yesterday by two station hands, m a very exhausted condition. Gabrielson asserts that he had not touched food for sixteen days, and that during that period he had not seen a living soul. Ilia feet present the appearance of having been frostbitten. He was stopped by Malcolm, and both came heavily to the ground. Cookley sustained a bad fracture of the leg, just above the ankle, and was carried off the Cold. His brother, J. Cookley, took his place, and the game was shortly renewed. Directly after, P. G. Smith, captain of the Wanganui team, had a spill and was stunned, but after a time was able to go on. The first bout of 40 minutes concluded without a score. Both team 3 appeared evenly matched. CHEI9TCHTTRCH, Sept. IS. Mr Jacobsen returnedyesterday from Alford Forest. He states that sinking has been commenced, and some stones found rather larger than those sent Home by Mr Kelsey. The lawn tennis match between Auckland and Dunedin representatives came off yesterday, and was won by Auckland. Six games were played m each set, and two sets out of three were to constitute tho victory. Auckland won the first set by 6to 5. Afterwards a match of one set was played, and Dunedin was victorious by 6 to 4. The Dunedin representatives, Dr Batchelor and Mr McNeil, were nervous, especially at first, but the Auckland gentlemen, Me3sra Dargaville and A. McDonald, M.H.R.'s, showed no symptoms of this disorder. A return 'match is announced for Wednesday. A collier named William Ramsay, of Ahbotsford, was killed at one o'clock this morning. He was going home when he was overtaken by some horsemen. He mounted a horse saying he would have a ride, when just as he got into the saddle the animal gave & sudden swerve and fell on its Bide, and Kamsay had his skull fractured. He lingered four hours. He was a married man with a family.
