THE WIMBLEDON RIFLE MEETING.
The American taam competed at Wimbledon on July 17th, m the contest for a cup, and £50, presented specially for their competition. They fired at 200, 500, and 600 yards. The largest scores were at first concluded to be made by Joiner and Hinman, who tied for the prize. In* the contest for the Queen's Prize, Sergeant McKay, of the Ist Sutherland Regiment was victor. - •
I Three targets were assign ed to the Americans for the International match, and three to the Britiih m shooting for tho St. Leger prize, on the 16th. Five of the contestants, including Hinman of the American team, and Young and Ribbons of the Engliah team, made equal scores of 48 out of a possible 50.
Onthel9lh, the shooting for, the Karlsruhe Cup, wai oompleted hy teams representing England, Canada, the Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, and India. The teams were compoied of eight men each, firing at 200, 500, and 600 yards, each man being allowed seven (hots at each range. The Cup was won by the English team, the scares being, Hngliih 698 ; Canadian, 679 ; Jersey, 638 ; Guernsey, 620 ; and Indian, 614.
A revision of the scores madn by American riflemen m their shooting on ths 17th for a cup and £50 specially presented for that competition, shows Van Hensen was victor, as his score for two days* shooting was 172, against 169 for Joiner. The international match took place on July 21st. The weather was stormy. The firing at the 800 yards range was completed by one o'clock. The Americans had scored 346 points to the British team's 330 up to that time. The average for the two days was — Americans 1424, British 1400. The (cores at 900 yards showed the Americans to be 263, and tho British 297. This made the aggregate at ths end of the 900 yards shootingAmericans 1687, British 1697. The British team won the match by 45 points, the grand total being British 1951, Americans 1006. Upon the conclusion of the match the crowd broke through the ropes, and Earl Brownlow, m a short speech, thanked the Americans for coming to England, and said he hoped they would take their beating gracefully. They had backbone enough left to join m cheering the British team and the British nation. Tho crowd then dispersed, after tome vigorous handshaking with the Americans. Their defeat is attributed to the inferiority of their weapons. The Lord Mayor entertained the American Bifle Team at luncheon m the Mansion House on Tuesday, July 24th. SPORTING. The Newmarket July meeting began on the 3rd. The race for tho July Stakes was won by Olariwane, Eastern Empress second, Glenneleyn third. The Beaufort Stakes were won by Cohort, Pinacm second, Recino Bolero third. On the sth July the Handicap was won by Lord Cumberland's colt Chivalry (late Pastrycook), Bir G. Chetwynd'a Tompipe second and Becino Bolero third. There were six starters, and Chivalry won by a length, Bolero being a bad third. Ths race for the Kempton Park July Handicap on the 14th inst. was won by the Duke of Westminster's colt Whipper-in, Lord Cumberland's colt Chivalry (late Pastrycook) second, and Colonel Forster's Toaitmaster third, fliore were 17 starters.
