CORRESPONDENCE.

THE BOARD OF EDDOATION AND THEIR LATE AROHITEOr.

TO TIIE EDITOR OP THE TIUAED 1 BEBALD. Sib, — Having been informed on reliable authority, that the Board of Education passed to-day a resolution — "That the Chairman take prompt action, civil or criminal, for the recovery of a certain agreement, tbe property of tho Board re WaimaUitai School building, taken and held by me, "I beg to be allowed, through the medium of your columns, to state for the information of the public, who perhaps might infer from the passing of such an extraordinary resolution, that I have done something very wrong or even criminal, that the document in question ia at muoh the property of the Board as the paper I am now writing on. The agreement in question is simply an agreement of contract entered into directly between the Waiinataitai Sohool Committee and the oontractor, this being dona by direct instruction from the Board. In the whole dooument the Board's name is never even mentioned, and how, therefore, could it be their property. The agreement says that this document is to be attached to the plans and specifications. Now, these being in my possession, I am bound likewise to hold the agreement j besides the architect is always the proper person to keep suoh documents, since he stands like umpire between tbe two parties. If ever I gave them to the Board it was for the safe keeping on my own aocount and no more. Tbe Board by this extraordinary resolution seem determined, it appeari, to make themselves etill more the laughing Block of the whole district. This short expose, I trust, will enlighten the publio and may perhaps account for the strange fact that all matters in dispute between the Boardnd myself are discussed in close Committee. I am, &0., M. BE H. DUVAL. Aug. 2nd, 1883.
