THE DUNEDIN GAOL ENQUIRY.
(By Tblegr&pii.) Ptjnbdin, July 31. At the gaol enquiry to-day Captain Hume gave evidence. The most interesting portion < had reference to a letter written by Mr Caldwell to him m connection with certain com- ] plaints about wardere being out of uniform. In tliis letter Mr Caldwcll asserted Inspector i Wcldon, of the local Police Forco, had fro- < quently expressed a hostile feeling to tho gaol ' management, and ho added that Inspector ' Wcldon hod been an unsuccessful candidate : for the position of Gaoler when he (Mr Caldwcll) was appointed. Inspector Wcldon was communicated with on the matter, and stated i that when the office was vacant ho w:is asked • to accept it, but declined, and was certainly i not a candidate. Tho other portions of Capt. i Hume's evidence dealt with a variety of subject?.
