SUPREME COURT.
(By TbLBGBAPH.) Duhbdht, July 16. The Wains were brought up for sentence thi» morning. The male prisoner pleaded that the Judge would be ltnieut on his wire's' account. The Judge refused to rsserve the point raised by Mr Denniston for the defence, laying that the medical evidence was absolutely clear. Addressing the prisoners he ■aid be concurred m the verdict wbich had been returned. Saoh a, verdict would bare been returned by any jury m any part of the colony. Whilst giving weight to the jury's recommendation to mercy, he pointed out that if the prisoners had by their act contemplated the child's death they were guilty of murder. He thought prisoners were animated towards the unfortunate child by a wicked evil spirit. The sentence on each would be seven years' penal servitude. The oriminal sessions of the Supreme Oonrt ended to-day, wh»o George W. Minter, for embezzlement from the New Zealand Insurance Company, was found guilty and sen* tenced to two years. This is his second trial this session, the first jury having disagreed. Last session he was acquitted on a similar oharge.
