THE QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY,
Saturday being the sixtieth anniversary of Ihe birth nf Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, il was ob>erved as a general holiday throughout South Canterbury, us well as m many other ports of the colony. The weather, however, was anything but rojal being miserably cold and wet from daylight, till dusk. Di spite Ihis fact, how ever, and the muddy, Bloppy state of the "round, theTimiiru people Bullied out m large numbers, many ol ihem patronising Ihe Tradesmen's Athletic Sports, "while others went to the Grand National Steeplechase Meeting nt Oamaru, or took advantage of the cheap fares to visit Woimate, Temuka, and other country towns. The sham fight at Temuka was a great- success, and reflected great credit on tho several corps engiged m it. The following are details of the principal events of the day at Timaru and elsewhere.
