The following correspondence was read and '- considered : — i From Mr W. H. Hammond, thanking the ' the Board for the honorarium granted him at ! tho last meeting, but at lho sume timo stating ■ thnt o'iy services ho might hnvo' been able to ' render thn Bonrd m his private capacity were 3 given without nny id^a of rcmuneiation, and ■ further, thai, he would only be too glad tn I- rentier nny services m his power to the Board I m future. From tho Secretary to the Education Del partinent, Wellington, m reply to a letter ' forwarded by the Chairman, Btating that the ' Government were unable to comply with the request of the Board, that tlieir correspondence and telegrams should be franked. He suggested that the Board's Secretary would have no difficulty m getting their correspondence franked by tho Secretary to the South > Cunt erbury Education Board. From Mr Vcel, Secretary tothe North Can- » terbury Education Bonrd, re the counterparts x of leases of the Board's reserves. x On the motion of Mr Belfield it was agreed i — "That tho Secretary write to Messrß Garrick and Cowlishnw, requesting to ba mii formed to whom tbo counterparts of the leases • of tho Board's Reserves Nos. 1195, 940, 942, i 1211 and 1212 were delivered." It was also resolved on the motion of the , Rev. G. Barclay—" Thut the Secretary be re- , quested to obtain, if possible, copie3 of the , leases of the Board's Reserves from the leases I m possession of tho lessees." I eei-obis. COUNTBY MRMBEBS' EXPENSES. Mr Belfield moved, Mr Cliff seconded, and iit was agreed — " That the expenses of mem- > bers residing m the country, incurred at their . ettendnnce on the Board, bo paid by the i Board." I TEACHING STAFF FOB HIOH SCHOOL. ; The Rev G. Barclay snid that, no' withstand- -. ing the noiice of motion regarding the con- > sideration of the proposed teaching staff I for the new High Soliodl, for his own part, he i was not very enthusiastic about discussing the matter just then, as he did not think they i need be m any great hurry about '. it; but at the same time he was quite willing to tako part m such a discussion then, if the other members could i spare the time. He thought thut they i bad Beveral months before them — an ample margin— in which they might discuss tho question. When tho eubj-ct was being opproached he would suggest that tbey should • consider, firstly, what were the extent of their resources ; secondly, what they would propose to teach; and thirdly, the etaff and their emolument. In dealing with tho first of these, tho resources of the Board, they Bhould ta*e care to deduct the ordinary expenses — the salary of a janitor, the premium for insurance, cost of repairs, _c, so as to exactly see what they would hnve for the teaching stnff. In the second place, os he had slated, they should consider the question of what they proposed to teach. They conld not. of course it was easy to see, teach so wide a curriculum as did larga schools which had largo funds, and were able io employ a largo staff, and therefore they should consider what it was possible for them to teaoh. In the third place they should classify their proposed Btaff according to emolument, and see that a margin was left over for necessary and unavoidable expenditure. Tbe three matters he had mentioned would serve to guide the members of the Board when fully discussing the subject. The Chairman suggested that the question shonld be referred to a sub-committee to report upen, as the Board would be m a better position to fully discuss it, wben something definite was brought before them. On the motion of Mr Chisholm it was agrped —"That the Revs W. Gillies and G. Barclay, ! and Messrs Belfield and Howell be appointed i a sub-committee to report at the next meeting '. of the Board, on the proposed teaching staff, salaries, and the ordinary expenditure of the 1 Board." __ , TBBB FLANTING. I On the motion of Mr Belfield it was re- J solved— -"That a sum not exceeding £50 be expended on planting the High Sohool |]

gro<md, providing that, m lhe opinion of the Clii.irn.an, there are funds to meet the expenditure." The Board then adjourned.
