ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL AT AUCKLAND
(Peb " Timabij- Hbeald " Special Wibb.) Auckland, Jan. 16, 1 a.m. The P.M.3. City of Sydney, Captain H. C. Deurb iru, left San Francisco on December 23rd, at 3.40 p.m. Experienced strong N.W. aales and rough seas during the first 24 hours; thence to Honolulu moderate weather and light winds; arriving at 12.54 pm, on December 30th, and making the trip m 6 days 21 hours 24 minutes, the fastest time ever recorded. She left Honolulu on December 31st at 6.41 a.m., having been detained ccv n hours, owing to a strong south-westerly gale. On Saturday, January 10th, nt 5 25 p.m., when m Int. 31.44 i., log. 179.07 E., or about 460 miles from Aucklund, the after crunk pin broke. The wind wus then N.E. Kept the ship under sail until January 14th, having had lii-lit winds from N.E., round to N.W. and W. to B.W. Having secured the crank pin temporarily, and a3 well as could be done at sea, at 1.30 p.m. on January 14th started ahead at the rate of five kcots per hour. From thence fine wea> her was experienced to Auckland, where the steamer arrived at 12.15 a.m. Up to the time of the accident the engines never worked better, the ship having averaged 301 miles per day for 17 consecutive days, an almost unparalleled run.
