The United States now exports about 200,000,000 pounds of cheese annually. Dr. Halley says that the total evaporation caused by the rays of the sun on the surface of the Mediterranean Sea amounts to 52,000,000,000 tons of water m one summer day. In the United States the city council of New Orleans, La., have passed an ordinance compelling all commercial travellers to pay a license fee of 100 dols., which entitles them to sell goods by sample or take orders during their stay m that city. Messages were transmitted a distance of thirty miles, to the surprise of the Chinamen, who showed deep interest m the experiment. Placards of similar contents have been repeatedly posted up, and pamphlets distributed. The latest pamphlet of the sort, entitled " Buried Alive," professes to describe the tortures of political prisoners detained m the dungeons of the St. Petersburg fortress of Saints Peter and Paul. It would appear as if the production of Russian revolutionary literature, m and out of Russia, almost extinct since the death of Alexander Herzen, has been resumed with a will. In Lombardy m 1830 there were 20,000 peasants attacked by it; m 1856 there were 38,000; and, though no statistics have since been published, there are believed to be now 40,000.
