Attempted Suicide. — A good deal of alarm was created yesterday morning, shortly after eleven o'clock, when news reached town that a man named R. M. Chadwick, well known as a chemist at Pleasant Point, had attempted to commit suicide while waiting for the train at the Washdyke Railway Station. Mr Chadwick, it appears, left his home at Pleasant Point yesterday morning, with the intention of proceeding to Christchurch, and •was waiting for the 11.30 up train i.t the Washdyke Railway Station, when ho was seized with a fit of despondency, and, while m this state, attempted to take his own life by stabbing himself m the breast with a surgical instrument, which he carried m his pocket. Mr Gould, the station master, on noticing the occurrence, immediately took steps to prevent him from injuring himself further, and having succeeded m taking from him the instrument with which he had committed the rash act, telegraphed to Mr Jones, the station-master at Timaru. Mr Jones communicated with the police, and delayed the train for a few minutes until Constable Sullivan arrived, who proceeded by the train to the scene. Shortly afterwards, Mr Jones received a second telegram, stating that if a medical man could be sent out at once, the man's life might probably be saved. Inspector Fender, who, m the meantime, had reached the railway station, on being so informed.

the Iby Mr Jones, communicated with Dr. .ni. Mucintvro, and a special engine having been got m readiness, Dr. Mncintyre, Inspecto tor fender, and Mr Jones proceeded by it to Washdyke. Dr. Macintyre, on examinca. I ing '''c unfortunate sufferer, found he mi I hud inflicted on his left breast twenty-six ntl wounds, two of which were of a very serious jn I character. lie was then brought by train to l(J . I Timarii, and subsequently removed to the n . I hospital, where he still lies m a very preearia I oils condition, though his medical attendant I entertains hope of his ultimate recovery. Mr ,d Chadwick was well known and highly to respected at Akaroa, where he for a ;h l° n g time practised as a chemist. ',\i I Recently he came to Pleasant Point, where he opened a shop, and followed his t e profession, but for some time past appears r e to have been man unsettled state of mind. | . I He told a man at Pleasant Point yesterday n ' I morning, when leaving there, that he intended tj j to enter the Sunnyside Asylum, as he believed J I lie was not safe m being at large, and m con- , I versing with a friend yesterday afternoon m f I the hospital, he said he used to bo afraid I that lie would poison someone while practising 1 1 his profession. He has, since his self-inflicted I injuries, expressed a hope that he would die, and appeared to have no desire to live. Scene on the Beach.— Some sailors belonging to the brigantine Nightingale, created I a scene on the beach yesterday afternoon. I One of them, whose name is Charles McKin- ' lay, while slightly under the influence of | I drink, refused to return to the vessel, and was [ I given m charge by the captain to Constable ! Brady. As soon as McKinlay found himself m the custody of the constable, he appeared ; I to regret his conduct, and after having apolo- ' I gised to the captain, lie intimated to him his willingness to proceed on board the I vessel at once, if the constable would only let him. At the request of the captain the constable allowed his prisoner to go, and both I himself and the captain proceeded towards I the beach. On the way, however, they again I quarrelled. McKinlay assaidted the captain, I striking him m the face with his I clenched hand, and might have m I llieted severe injuries on him had not some other men interfered. McKinlay was then given into the custody of Constable Brady, and taken by him to the lock-up where he still lies. No sooner had this scene terminated than another sailor belonging to the same vessel was seen coming down towards the street so drunk that he was scarcely able to walk. As soon as he had reached his shipmates, who, with their captain were preparing to go on board, he threw himself on the ground nnd would not move further. His mates did all they could to make him stand up and walk to where their boat was moored, but all they could do failed to make him move a limb, and ultimately they had to take him bodily between them. On reaching the boat they flung him into it, but ho was no sooner it than he became extremely active, and it took two of his mates to prevent him from jumping overboard. Ultimately the urew managed to get the boat away from the shore, and then proceeded towards their vessel.
