From both home and abroad trade advices or* not satisfactory | the war now existing will doubtlrs have a depressing effect at the ensuing sales. FLAX. New Zealand firm and felling at £25. WHEAT. Messrs Miles, Bro)>.. -n ' Co. report undei date London, May 3r •. .is follows : — ■wot.'i.. The market has bo • ..-v dull, and, al though stocks are light. act witl extreme caution, and mer. > \< r haie for im mediate requirements, the iiade being ver unsettled owinp to the present state o European politics. At the tecond teries of Antwerp eales of River Platte wool, which op.ned on the 24th ult., with 25,000 bales for ofler, although there was a good attendance but little business was transacted, and of the 1,000 bales catalogued only 214 were sold, at a decline of OJd to Id per lb on February prices. The arrivals for our next sales, to open on the Bth inst., are 307,875 bales, as stated below, the list having been closed at 4 o'clock on the 24th ult., the day on which the quantity (300,000 bales) Oxed by the Wool Committee was passed : — New South Wales and Queensland, 54,302 bales ; Victoria, 102,799 biles ; Tasmania, 9,797 bales ; South Australia, 38,775 bales ; West Australia, 3,693 bales; New Zealand, 68,533 bales; Cape and Natal, 29,976 bales : total, 307,875 bales. WHEAT AND BLOUB. The wheat trade has been very active both here and on the Continent, the market having f^*W f W^ B rrn3Rln i tfaiifo"Hnau r t : a 1 fg3? 0 ' 1 J l r' rived off the coast weredieposed of at 68s, but there has since been a slight reaction. The maiu cause of this sudden rise is of course the outbreak of theJUuso-Turkish war, but undei ordinary circumstances, at we have before •tated, prices were bound to rise, the supplies from all parts having fallen off considerably. The arrivals from Australia have been only 1358 bag*, and we hear that 70s per 480 lbs has been refu-ed lately for a parcel on passage from that colony, a similar quantity having been sold a fortnight earlier for 10a le.-s money. Fine Australian* wheat m granary is held for 72s per 496 lbs. The shipments from India are likely to be larger and of better quality than previous years. Wo quote Australian wheat, 70s to 72s per 496 lbs ; New Zealand wheat, 68s to 70s per 496 lbs ; Australian flour, superfine 48s to 525, household 45s per 280 lbs ; N«w Zealand flour, 42s to 45s per 280 lbs. TALLOW AND HIDES. There has been a speculative demand for tallow, and a considerable business transacted m Russian Y.C., which has advanced to 455. A like improvement m th > demand for Australian has also taken place, and prices have been gradually riting, the present value of good to fine mutton being 42s 6d to 43s 6d, and beef tallow 41s 6d to 425, which is about 3s per cwt higher than on the 10th ult. As the war cannot interfere with our supplies, it is uoubtful whether this advance will be maintained if large shipments continue to be made to this countiy. Thare is a better tone m the hide market, and prices have slightly improved. We quote good heavy New Zealand sid, and light ox and cows 4id to 4Jd per lb. PRESERVED MEAT. The market for tinned meat is better, and a firmer tone pervades the trade. Although no large tales have been effected, there is considerable enquiry, with every prospect of business springing up.
