Auckland, Wednesday Evening. News from Fiji reports that the captain of the Dancing Wave arrived from the Islands, and announced the murder of three of his men there. The schooner "Van Tromp was wrecked and the crew escaped. The boat was picked up by the Basilisk. The Bau mountaineers have surrendered, An enquiry was to have been held on board the Cossack relative to a charge of kidnapping against the schooner Nukulau. Three of the crew accused were sent to Sydney for trial. Tanna residents complain of the conduct of the Natives. The grave of MrWhitby has been opened, and the bones scattered broadcast. The Freight Company have received information from the home agent that Messrs Shaw and Savillo had consented to lower freights and employ only firstclass iron vessels. The agent therefore postponed commencing operations, and •was awaiting instructions. Thursday Evening. Kavanagh's flax-mill at Manakau was destroyed by fire, it is believed through the act of an incendiary. The mill was uninsured. Mr Basset's election to the Provincial Council for Franklyn was unopposed. The Nevada sails for the South to-night. Caledonians are stationary at £27. The market is dull. Brown and Inglis' saw-mills at the Grove were destroyed by fire. The property was uninsured. Westpoet, Thursday Evening. A slip m the Alpine claim has covered tho rich leader for the present. Napier, Thursday Evening. Mr Colenso is re-elected to the Provincial Council by a majority of one. At the inquest on the bodies of the Maories who died at Waipukurau, the jury returned a verdict of " Poisoned by arsenic, found by the natives at the side of the road, which they presumed to be flour." Judge Ch.ipman is unable to attend the Appeal Court owing to a pressure of business.
