The debate on the vote of want of confidence was brought to an unexpected conclusion last night Messrs Williamson and Kelly made brief speeches, and no other member rose, Mr Fox replied very briefly. S. Harrison Reynolds Borlase Burns Farnell Potts After the votes were taken the House adjourned, Monday, June 28. Messrs Fox, Yogel, and McLean hare jutfc been sworn m as Ministers. There is great difficulty m getting other members to join. It is reported that Mr Tancred has refused to accept office. It is thought that Dr Feathorston, and Mr Dillon Bell will probably join without office. Tuesday, June 29. When the House met to-day, Mr Stafford presented a petition from 1000 electors and residents of the Timaru and Gladstone districts, also petitions from the Timaru Borougli Council, and Levels Road Board, praying for the creation of a county. Mr Jollie presented a petition from the Timaru and Gladstone Board of Works containing a similar prayer. The petitions were read and laid on tha table of the House. Mr Fox made a Ministerial statement after the petition had been presented. He said the policy of his Government would be to confine future operations to defensive and not aggressive measures. He proposed to largely reduce the number of the colonial force, and endeavour to make it a police force. He should detain the 18th Regiment, and ask for another Imperial Regiment specially recruited for the service. It was not known how much money would be wanted. The Middle Island must bear the coat of war operations jointly with the North, and the latter would bear the sole cost of a loan for opening up the country by roads. An Imperial Act would be obtained to fix that liability. He would not be a party to any organic changes m the constitution without an appeal to the country. He hoped Boon to be able to fill up the Ministerial offices still vacant.
