The East Coast Titles Investigation Bill was brought m by Mr Carloton, but was ordored to be read that day six months, on a mdtion by Mr Richmond. An entertainment is to be given to Sir George Grey on Tuesday. Mr Fox will probably bring forward counter resolutions to the Government financial proposals. Mr Atkinson will move on Wednesday that Major Hunter is • entirely unfit to bo an officer m the armed constabulary. Accident. — An accident occurred a few days sinee 'at the Temuka Brewery, to a man named Wiggina, who waa employed m raising a vat to ita proper place. It appears that whilst the vat was being raised, some part joif tha, tadcling gave way and the vat fdl striking the poor fellow a moat severe blow somewhere abont his- middle. On Thuraday afternoon we were glad fo hear ho waa doing well, but not able to leave his bed. Tkmoka Ploughing Match.— We have been requested to correct a typographical error which was among the conditions of the match. For.the words tea equal ridges, read two equal ridges. Total Ausnuracß Society. — A public meeting will be held to-night at the Mechanics' Institute. Timaru Mechanics' Isstitctis. — A Committee meeting of the Iftmaru Mechanics' Institute was held, on Wednesday evening, the 2nd September, m the library ofthe Institute. Present— Dr Butler (chairman), Messra Healey, Yardley, Durand, Horton, Cullman, aud George. The minutes of the last meeting wereread and confirmed. A letter wai read received from the Librarian m reference to lighting reading-room, &c." It was resolved— "That the Librarian be allowed 5s per quarter : extra for lighting the reading-room." "That the Librarian be empowered to enforce payment of lines as per list handed m." "That the files of all newspapers to December, 1867, be sold to the highest bidder." "That the Librarian be iustructed to request parties applying for books to produce subscription tickets or other proof of membership." The Tasmanian Times of tho 17th ultimo has the following :— "Last Saturday, amost remarkable phenomenon was. witnessed at New Town, near the residence of Captain Bailey. Early m the mornihg, a tidal wave was seen approaching the shore, of vast body, and spread over a large area of hitherto dry land. This phenomenon was repeated at intervals throughout.the entire day, and was naturally a matter of much curiosity to the residents of the neighborhood." On Wednesday, John Smith for steal, ing.- from a dwelling waa sentenced to three years penal servitude, two previous convictions of petty larceny having been recorded againat him. John Brook Edwards for forgery was sentenced to two year's imprisonment witb hard labor. John Connelly and Edwagd Samson, charged with house-breaking were sentenced to a aimilaf punishment. Thomas Brown Bain, late clerk to the Bench, Christchurch, ehargod with embezzlement; pleaded guilty, and had a sentence . of three yeara penal servitude passed on him. Bridget Ferrick, for Weeny, was sentenced to twelve months imprisonihent with hard labor. Thia closed the business of the Court that day. Feur cases remained for hearing, viz., Edward Genet for embezzlement, Charles Roaenaki for bigamy, -James Campbell, forging and uttering, and one other. Waihi. — On Saturday evoning, the 29th instant, a meeting was held at the Waihi Crossing Hotel, for the purpose of. taking steps for having that locality declared an educational district. The Bey. L. L. Brown waa voted to the chair.
