TEMUKA.
[FROM OUR OWN COKRBHrONDENIv] <■ Wednesday, August 26. .. Monday was intensely cold, and recalled to" our minds the Christmas rhyme, "The north winds do blow, and we shall have snow." The expectation was not unfulfilled, for on Tuesday morning everything was covered with snow'tb the depth of some inches, to the great delict of the young ones, who looked forward with joyful anticipations to the delights of snowballing. It does certainly afford a great decree of pleasure to boys, as I know by exuerieuce, to run about ln the show till their shoes are wet through, and their hands have lost all seuse of feeling ; but as we grow older, we learn to regaid these pleasures with indifference. The sight of a good wood tire iu-doors was much more pleasant yesterday than the prospect from the windpwai About noon the snow changed to rain, which continued through the rest of the day and all night. To-d:iy has been showery, but we hope for a favourable change again. It is much to be regrettel £hat the late fine weather did not continue .for another, fortnight,, as by that time sowing w ould have been finished, with .uikfctAiaiij— niicl\vfi\» W.«^ QUtl>.Jirafc._will '"parting shot" of Old Winter, to show us • what he can do before , leaving ns; after which, it is to be hoped, he will quietly resign his sovereignty, and make way for " bright and balmy Spring." It Buenis our neighbours at Wai hi are .determined to be no longer dependent on Temuka for the education of their children, tio -they w&sli to kefc 'up'for themselves ai an educational district As it appears to' b£ intended to erect a school within the township, of Winchester, I suppose the proprietor of that township has followed the liberal example of other projectors of townships m the district in.-makiug reserves for (school purposes. It ia to be hoped there may be also church reserves ; for though, as I have often said, 1 do most strongly object to compulsory payments for either religious or educational objects,, I think it is the duty of each one of ;us;to cou\tribute'to Itoth m proportion as we have been prospered iv our temporal circumstances.
