TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Club Hotel, on Monday the 24th instant. . ■ , Theve were present — Hia Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Healey, Stubbs, Perry, Melton, Taylor, and Clif£ The Engineer was also present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following letters were read respecting a site for the erection of a new hospital building: — Public Works Office, . Cbristchurch, August 21, 1868. Sir, — I have the: honor to enclose an extract from a letter from the Chairman of the Tiniaru and Gladstone Board of Works, relative to a site for an hospital building m the town of Timaru, and to request that you will be good enough to inform me whether the. Municipal Council has any objection to the erection of the building on the eito reconiniended thorein. I am, 4c, E. Jou.iz, Secretary for Public Works. [Extract from a letter received from the Chairman of the Timaru and Gladstone Board of Works, dated July 6, 18C3.] " 1 have the honor to inform yon that a committee of the Board of Works (consisting of Messrs LeCreu, Perry, Healey, and Litxnioole), appointed to report on the Tiraaru hospital, and a site for the same, after con>orring with Drs Butler and McLean, arid inspecting the ground, beg to recommend : — . ' ' That the site for the hospital be four acres or thereabouts, being -a part of the Provincial Government reserve, situate at the junction 6f Queen and High streets, having a frontage of six chains tv Queen street, and seven chains to High street.- ' \ " The above site is on one of the downs facing north, and it is easily accessible, High street being metalled. It is removed from all noise occasioned by traffic, and as it forms part of a park reserve, would not be liable to be shnt m by other buildings. It is within easy access of the beach for the convalescents. Also water has been obtained on an adjoining section." ' Proposed by .Councillor Melton,, seconded by Councillor Taylor— "That the clerk be instructed to write to. the Secretary for Public Works, stating .thai the Council approve of the site recommended by the Board- of Works fur the erection of an hospital." Carried. Another letter from the Public Works Office/ was also read with .reference to the reserve for a water-race leading from the Pareora river to the town of, Timaru, requesting information as to whether the line laid out by Mr Krazer was properly surveyed and marked out on the ground, and if so, m what way marked. Also whether the reserve m question is now likely to- be of any public utility. ; Proposed by Councillor Healey, and seconded by Councillor Melton — "That the clerk be instructed to reply to the letter, and that although of no use at present, on account of want of funds, it is considered desirable to retain the reserve, as . marked out by . Mr Frazer, as being the only known source from which a sufficient supply of water conld be obtained." Carried.' - A letter from Mr Clapham was opened, m which he signified his 'intention of erecting a house and shop m Great South Road, next to Mra Webster's shop, and upon the same leveL The clerk was instructed to refer Mr Clapham to the Engineer. ■ The following tenders were opened from candidates desirous 'of filling the office ''of town clerk, with the yearly salary expected : — ..••,. James. Fleming, £90; A. G. Oarr, £156; A. W. Whally, £l3oj J. Keilly, £150; E. H. Lbttgbi £100; A. Fisher, £75; J. L. Lancaster, £140; Walter Kitaon, £100 ; W. Mans Held, i-50. Some discussion ensued as to the desirability of erecting on office wherein to transact the business of the Council. Proposed by Councillor Cliff, and seconded by Councillor Stubbs— "That the Engineer be instrncted to examine the section on which the well m George street is sunk, and to report at the next meeting if ther^e is sufficient room to admit of an office being built there, and if co, W'giv* an estimate of the probable coat of erecting a small wooden building, with a fireplace, &c. Councillor Perry stated that £99 had been ; voted to the Borough Council by the Board i of Works, to be expended on the main road within the Borough. A deputation from the volunteer fire brigade (Messrs D. McLean, and W. Mauro) waited upon the Council to ascertain what assistance the brigade might expect from them. The Council considered they were not m a position to give an immediate answer to the deputation, but would give the matter their consideration, and promised to render such assistance as they could. Councillor Perry drew the attention of the Council to the state of that portion of Sophia street which leads up to St Mary's Churujh. The matter was referred to the Engineer. Councillors Stubbs and Perry tendered their resignation as members of the Council The Council then separated.
