I wn ' at a loss to updewtapd what is being done by onr delegate sent there to assist us. Perhaps circumstances are different now to last yearj but we know .whafr serrice was rendered to the -district by tha delegate sent; last year ; the difficulties m th« way. appeared much greater then than now. Ministers are in'our fifroai'i ounnember and the: member for Gladstone ~ hare spoken unmistakably ; '6u*-'cae^ is oomplete j and the stitistics which shouW W-ia J po»wwicm"Of the < delegate,
and are given m the petition, are undeniable and unanswerable. ■ With all these things m our favour, nothing has been done as yet ; or if so, the public journals have not noticed it. The Committee, as well as the person delegated, to a certain extent are answerable to the public, and a strict account must be rendered if the measure is lost by their neglect. We may perhaps be told there are so many difficulties and prejudices to be overcome. Well, if there were no difficulties to overcome, we should not have required extra assistance m the shape of a delegate; and also, wo must bear m mind* that the knowledge of these difficulties existed when the office was accepted. I may judge wrongly, and though nothing has been told us, yet a great deal may have been done to hasten the measure. I hope it may be so, but this silence appears to me very ominous. I sometimes think the last measure was taken and passed from a personal animosity to the late Superintendent. It seems to me very strange that more active steps are not taken by tho League and their delegate. Perhaps this may draw out a little information from some of them, and I hope it may be satisfactory to the public. I am, &.c, Elector, August 24.
