VOLUNTEER ARTILLERY COMPANY.

On Tuesday evening a meeting was held at the Royal Hotel Assembly Rooms, of those who had signed a petition for presentation to His Excellency the Governor, praying that the petitioners might be recognised as a Volunteer Artillery Company. About thirty persons were present. Lieutenant Fendall, the officer commanding No. 7 Company, Timaru Rifle Volunteers, occupied the chair. Mr Fendall stated that he had been requested by Adjutant Rookes to call a meeting of those gentlemen who had signed the requisition, and to state to them the terms on which their services would be accepted, and on which arms and ammunition would be supplied to them. He then read a communication he had received from Adjutant Rookes, which stated that the petition had been forwarded to the Governor, and His Excellency been advised to accept the same. It was also stated that no capitation allowance could this year be granted to the Company, as the vote of the General Government for that purpose had i been exhausted. The Adjutant also required' an assurance that a powder magazine, and a shed for the Armßtroug gun could be provided. > Several questions were then put to Lieutenant Fendall upon matters connected with the proper embodiment of the Company, who, m replying, read several clauses from the "Volunteer Regulations " bearing upon the questions. After some discussion m reference to a powder magazine and gun-shed, Mr Durand said he had no doubt that both could be provided. After a few more questions by Mr Cardale and others. Lieutenant Fendall swore m those present who were desirous of joining the Com- ! pany. Twenty-three men were enrolled, and the meeting adjourned until Wednesday next, so as to allow several who were unable to attend, an opportunity of joining the Corps.
