FOOT-ROT IN SHEEP.

The following 1 letter on the above subject recently appeared m the Southern Cross: — Sin, — I see you have opened the subject of foot-rot m sheep m j-our paper. I don't think there are many who will question that foot-rot m sheep is infectious. My object m writing- is not to enter into that argument, but simply to state the remedy for that disease. Of course, m the old country every shepherd has his own theories upon, and remedies for, sheep diseases; and the master, m most cases, if he has a trustworthy man, leaves the flock to his care. But m a new country, men turn their attention to new occupations, and may be, experienced servants are not easily got hold of. Having- spent some years among: the Cotswolds, I would suggest the following : — As soon as you detect lameness, separate the sheep from the iiock — "a

stitch m time saves nine" — carefully examine its feet, and should no other cause of lameness be found, commence treatment immediately. Pare away the hoof with a sharp knife until you lay bare the sore ; apply, with a feather or stick, a little of the dressing. Turn the sheep into a shed, or upon dry ground for a lew hours, and a second application will seldom be required. The recipe for the dressing is as follows : — Murcury, loz. ; nitric acid, Soz.j put into a bottle, and place out of doors until the mercury is dissolved, then add £-pint vinegar, and mix. Should any of your readers wish for further information, what I may know upon the subject is quite at their service. I have, &c, Edward J. Wright.
