TIMARU DISTRICT.

This long looked for event came off on Wednesday. From an early hour people were astir, and it was evident that the day was one of more than usual importance. It however was a capital excuse for a holiday, and not a few took advantage of it. From many of the buildings gay flags fluttered, and carriages carrying bands of music, and bedecked with flags, puraded the streets up to 4 o'clock. It was evident the Moorhouse party were greatly m the ascendant, for that gentleman's name alone was heard m the streets, and lustily shouted out by the occupants of the carriages. The names of the other two candidates were hardly mentioned. Between 3 and 4 o'clock the excitement became greater as many persons came up at the last moment to the polling booth to record their votes. At 4 o'clock the poll stood thus — Moorhouse, 90 ; Travers, 29 ; Lance, 5. At a little after 5 o'clock a telegram was received from Christchurch by the Editor of this journal to the effect that Mr. Moorhouse was virtually Superintendent having attained a majority of between 700 and SOO over his opponents. This being made public, great and long continued cheering was heard m various parts of the town. Altogether the election hats passed off creditably to all parties : drunkenness, that usual coucomitant at elections there was but one or two isolated cases, and at no time was there the slightest approach to riot or disorder. One fact speaks volumes for the good sense of the Electors here, the entire absence of all class feeling. There was a good deal of course of the usual chaff, but it was all of a most good natured kind, and never merged into angry and bitter recriminations, but too often the fore runners of an election row. The following are the returns from the outlying polling places of this district : — Mr. Cox's Woolshed — Moorhouse, 5 ; Lance, 34 ; Travers, 1. Mr. Jollies Woolshed— -Lance, 3; Moorhouse, 0; Travers, 0, Arowhenua — Moorhouse, 23; Lance, 17; Travers, 7. Levels — Moorhouse, 8 ; Lance, 1 ; Travers, 0. Sheath's Woolshed — Moorhouse, 2 ; Lance, 4 ; Travers, 0. Waimate — Moorhouse, 36; Lance, 5; Travers, 2. Waitaki — Lance, 3 ; Moorhouse, 0 ; Travers, 0. Mount Cook — no poll taken. The following is a correct return of the votes recorded for each candidate at the different polling places : —
