OAMARU.
[FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] There is a considerable degTee of stir and activity here at present m public matters, ana it is to be hoped that it may continue. For some time back a prospect has been held out to this town that Severn-street, or m other words the portion of the road leading into the town from the south should be formed ; a sum was put on the estimates, and money voted for the purpose. Now the Provincial Government shows itself m earnest m the matter, by advertising for tenders for the work, which when completed will doubtless be a decided advantage, as there is at present no properly formed road or entrance to the town m that direction. The list of new claimants to be placed on the electoral roll for this district having been published, is found to contain 221 names, and although a considerable number of these may oe amended claims, m consequence of change of qualification, there will be a large number of really new voters to be added to the roll this year. On the 26th instant a show of grain will be held here under the auspices of the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association, when a handsome cup is to be given by Messrs. Williams and Whitmore, brewers, for the best 100 bushels of malting barley. Smaller prizes are also to be given i'or wheat and varieties of oats. By such judicious measures the growth of cereals m the district will receive additional encouragement. Mr. Hislop, Inspector of Schools, pays us a visit this week, when he is to examine the district school, and deliver two lectures, one for the benefit of the Mechanics' Institute, the other m aid of the funds of the School Committee. The Oamaru Jockey Club is m a state of activity, and measures will no doubt be taken to have the racecourse vested m trustees for behoof of the public.
