ALCOHOLISM. V. TEETOTALISM.
' (To the Editor.). ; , Sir: In a recent issue of this paper I'notice that a correspondent trots out a number of scriptural quotations,in favor of alcoholism. ; Now, I have taken the trouble to look up the texts, and, while I am not prepared to deny that they are to . be found in the Bible, I can state without fear of contradiction that some are not to be found where stated.' That from Proverbs xxi., verses 6 and 7, is not to.be found there, but, unluckily for your correspondent, in verse 17, chapter xxi, I read: "He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man j he that loveth wiffe and oil shall not be rich." Regarding the quotation, "Give strong drink unto them that nre ready'to etc," may I point out that the bulk of the 'people aro riot in such'immediate peril of extinction, nor are their hearts si) heavy, as to warrant a recourse to, the pewter pot or wine cup to cheer them up? But if they do require a stimulant and believe the.best way is to waste their substance in alcoholic beverages —thereby entailing misery upon thpse dependent on.them arid adding to the responsibilities of "the ratepayers by causing the charitable'aid rate to increase—is it not about time they sought for. some ( more 1 effective, remedy for alleviating' their sorrow than one which has been not only found wanting in effectiveness, but' productive of misery, suicide and premature death?—l am,, et0.,,; LUX.
