REFUGEES FROM THE TRANSVAAL.

The Ninevah has several refugees, one of whom was formerly connected with the labor movement at Broken Hill. He decidedly has pro-Boer sympathies. The Transvaal under the Boer rule was essentially a poor man's land, but it is doubtful if it will continue so when Great Britain gets hold of it. He asserts the franchise is now regarded seriously by the Uitlanders, though it is good enough to pretext a quarrel. The majority of the Uitlanders are not wanted to vote. He regarded the Transvaal as merely a place to make money, which would be spent in England or Australia. The Boers promise to make it warm for volunteer fighters, but express sorrow for "Tommy Atkins," who- fights because ho is paid, but to volunteers who preferred the battle against them they would show no mercy.
