(Per Press Association.) • Weumgton, Maroh 7. Mr Hogben, the new Secretary of the Education Department, assumes his duty at the end of the month. The Marine Department has been advised that a kauri screen, used for holding a vessel's side light, has been picked up off Cape Egmont. Lady Prendergast's remains have been interred at Karon, and, at the request of Sir Jnmes Prendergast, the funeral was attended only by relatives and immediate friends.

The Minister for Lands leaves for America and Europe on April 17th.

In connection with 'the recent marine examination cases, Mr Glasgow, Secretary of the Department, wrote to Captain Jones to the effeot that as it haß come to the knowledge of the Government that he has obtained a master's certificate without sufficient qualification, which renders the same illegal. He calls upon him to surrender the certificate within seven days from 22nd February, with a view to having the same cancelled; failing which the Minister will take such steps as he is advised. Captain Jones waited on Mr Glasgow, declining the request, and so far nothing further has been heard of the matter, but it is possible more will come to light in a day or two. Miss Bobs, who disappeared from the Pukaki yesterday afternoon, was last seen about 3.30 reading in her cabin, about an hour before reaching the Heads. A search was made, but no trace could be found. There is no reason ; to suspect suipide, and it is supposed she must have fallen over* board. On a coal boat like the Pukaki there are very fow hands on deck, and her disappearance would readily have passed.unnoticed. She was 23 years of age and a school teacher at Westport. She was taking a trip for the benefit of her health, and was accompanied by her mother^
