Dukedin, June 7. : A meeting was held to-day of the creditors of Francis H. Laing;, produce merchant, The Official Assignoe explained he had done everything in his power to bring the.bankrupt back.j Recently it had been reported that tho bankrupt had been seen in papier, but ( the police had been unable to find him. j I A letter had fyeen received, from the ' bankrupt, expressing [Sorrow for what j had taken place, and promising tore-| turn,, jh reply, to questions, the Assignee.'said the bankrupt had collected ] money'-in "Wellington, £127,.and hnd also cashedachequesentby.his bro-j That was before : the. Assignee i was appointed receiver. Several ere* aitors spoke strongly on the unsatisfactory state of affairs. Mr 0. 8. Beeves : said; there were .several judgments against this man before he left. He! ,theh proceeded mirth, collected money.' and finally, went on ifco Sydney, and yet it appeared no steps could bo taken tobring him back. The sooner Chamber of Commerce look the matter'up', and urged an amendment : 6f ; the law, the better.'' The Assignee said'if the bankrupt had collected money after bankruptcy the people who paid him could have been called brito'r'epay. Mr Fraaer, Crown Prosecutor,, said he would confer with the creditors after the press retired.'
