MATOE BANKS APPOINTED TO THE CHAEGE oi> TiiK.DISTEICr. A Press Association telegram received yesterday from Wellington states:—" Pending the arrival of a permanent officer, Major Banks has been appointed to the temporary charge of the Auckland volunteers. SergeantBarberry is appointed as drill instructor.',; ■■ -/: Major Banks is a resident near St. John's College, having arrived in Auckland a few years ago'from India, where he was an ollicer jn the Hritisli Ariuy. His principal experience was gained in the cavalry branch of the service, but he has also served'asan infantry officer. He was formerly in •the Twelfth (Prince of Wales'. Royal) Laneersv aud he served in various lancers and cavalry regiments in Inxlia. He also had charge for a time of one of the largest military cantonments in the North of India! Major JBanks is well acquainted with the Auckland volunteers, and it is expected that he will make an able aud popular commanding officer,
