•>' The Herald's correspondent" Phaeton " writing of a visit to the; course on' Saturday saysJ. B. Williamson ~ opened the proceedings by sending his junipers Aughadnwoy and Ditto a good forking gallop, and the, former especially pleased the spectators by his resolute Hariaand Quick•i'fire! put in a ; working gallop on, the trial track,- but the latter was of little use to her companion at the finish who came home with Alf, Lady Marion ) had'all the'best of Admiral Hawke in a circuit on the tan, and Edith Cureton by herself showed improvement by ihe manner in which she , traversed a •'similar journeyl' Doris and St. Crispin were partners in a smart run five furlongs, in which the former had the advantage. Mantle and Pegasus can\tered to the mile and a half post ' where they jumped off and they put in about twelve furlongs together, Mantle .showing to mostadrantago at the finish. Pegasus limped.at the conclusion of the ■ gallop, but as he has done so before '.and become apparently quite sound again after a short rest-, the ailment is not thought 1 to be serious. When Chaafe was' seen leading St. Paul through the rails all eyes were of course directed to the Cup favourite. He jumped off about the mile and a quarter post, 'and ran a comfortable . once round, Pirate, whom he caught on ! the journey, being of no use to him. 1 Continuing on, the son of St, Leger was picked, up at the six furlong post by; the two-year-old Knight of Athol, but the latter could not pace it with his stable mate, and St. Paul carae home by himself. The son,of St. Leger moved free and well during the journey, Nestor and Uhlan , put in a couple of circuits on the" tan in company, the former showing to most advantage at the finish. Mars, Dauntless, and Solitaire jumped of! together, and the two former who moved nice and free, ; .completed a couple of circuits together. 1 Multiform and Gold Medallist handled themselves nicely in a five furlong spin, and no fault could be found at tho manner in which Sir Launcelot and Defiant moved in a spurt over , » couple of furlongs* St, Kegel who looks well, moved nicely in a '. circuit on the trial gallop. Mahaki and Tire jumped off together on the tan, and completed a fair working gallop over eleven furlongs,; both finishing together, . Mahaki was somewhat distressed at the finish, and from " the manner in which he blow at the conclusion of his task, it was quite : - «lear that he is above himself, and that he will require to be rattled along in earnest during tlie next fow days if he is to gain a situation in the St, Simon and Gipsy Prince ■; put in! twice round, both horses moving strongly, and the former especially pleased me by his resolutestyle of going. Others exercised were Panoply, St, , Elmo, Antares, Markinch, Donovan, •. Minola, Tamaki, Korowai, and "Retaliation, but they were not extended.
