Milk ami Meat Inspection

The adjourned meeting of the joint Committees of the Councils on the question of meat and milk inspection ' was held in the Borough Chambers last evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr Thos. Radford, Chairman), Crs Otter, Trembath, Whitehead, Deeble, Coutts, Scott, Dunlop, and Foy. The Secretary (Mr E. W.Hollis) read the proposed by-laws, which had been drafted under tho supervision of Mr Miller, tho Council's solicitor, to provide for meat inspection. Ho stated that Mr Miller would again revise the by-laws before finally submitting them as correct.

Some discussion took place re the olause which prohibits slaughterhouses within half-a-mile of the Borough boundary. ■ ' Cr Deeble thought that one of the Parawai slaughterhouses was within half-a-mile, in which case the by-law, if {passed, would terminate its existence. Cr Dunlop differed from Cr Deeblo with regard to the distance, and thought that the slaughterhouse in question was outside the limit. The matter then dropped. On the suggestion of Cr Deeble, it was resolved to insert a clause making it compulsory on the Inspector to attend all the public sales of cattle. Cr Scott thought that, a public abattoir should be established.

Cr. Deeble said that Hikutaia, Puriri, and Tairua districts would afford good openings for'cattle-raising, and it was too much to expect people from, these districts to bring their stockto a public abattoir. Cr Scott said it was impossible to appoint an Inspector for these districts. They could slaughter their cattle if they liked. The object of the abattoir would be to protect the town, The Secretary said that by an enactment of last session it was provided that settlers, unless they had a slaughterhouse license, could not slaughter anything but pigs. On the motion of Cr Dunlop, seconded by Cr Scott, it was resolved to print the by-laws and submit copies to each Council,

The by-laws dealing with milk inspection were abo read. Cr Trembath said that the clause which provided that there must be no door or window leading from dairies to dwelling apartments would prove inconvenient to some people. He thought it would be unfair that a man who sold milk both in the Borough and County should be compelled to pay a license fee to both bodies.

The Mayor thought that in such ii case it would not be incumbent on milk vendors to pay twice over. The by-law re door or window communication between dairies and dwelling apartments was already in force in the Borough. Tho members of the Borough Council, Cr Trembath included, had themselves passed it. On the motion of Cr Trembath, seconded by Cr Coutts, it was resolved to insert a clause providing that milk vendors should be included with dairymen in paying the license fee, Cr Foy said the fee pressed equally hard on a man with one cow as on one who owned a large number, He thought it ought to be abolished, Other Conncillorsopposed this,as the fee was necessary to meet the expenses of inspection. It was held that the resolution passed ve the meat inspection by-laws —that they be submitted to the Councils—was also applicable to tho by-laws for milk inspection. Cr Dimlop referred to the necessity of getting a thoroughly competent man as Inspector, and his remarks were endorsed by the Mayor and other Councillors. This was all the business
