CRICKET NOTES.

To-day's Matches. Seniors: • Oct. 19...Rovers v. Tararu J I/xiors : Oct. 19...Tararu v. Rovers ■ f ~ High School v. Unite:! First named lean to j rovile tl e ball.

[By Trundler.]

Tho season opens to-da/, and I hope tliero'will be a large attend r;e of spectators and players, At the delegates' meeting on Wednesday 'last it was stated that between 40 and 50 lion, members' season tickets had been issued—a fact which seems to point to a distinct increase of support on the part of tho general public. Tararu juniors have elected Mr Aaron Griffiths as their skipper for the ensuing season. Mr Geo, Harrow vice-captain and Mr Adam Wilson as the. other , member of the junior managing committee. . Considerable regret has been expressed at Mr Ryan's inability to accept office but it is satisfactory to know that the team will again have the benefit of his services in most if not in all matches.

All the clubs have been practising assiduously during the past, week and several players have, been exhibiting very fair form., As arranged last week, representatives from the various clubs—one club's representatives alone failing to put in an appearance—visited Parawai Gardens last Saturday, and'enclosed the pitches. Last night the pitches were thoroughly rolled and I am informed that although tho outfield is in places very rough that tho wickets themselves will prove a great improvement on those in use last year.

Owing to ail omission in the rules not before noted, the annual meeting of the Association neglected to appoint auditors. The delegates have resolved that Rev. W. R. Woolley and Mr W. H. V. Hall be asked to accept the position, this year. I hope players will note the rule re ceasing practice at 2.45 on Saturdays. The commencement'of the game is frequently retarded owing to the persistent neglect to observe this rule, although players thereby render themselves liable to a fine of 5s and disqualification until the fine is paid. An English club, yclept Bexley, goes in for'record breaking. Some years ago' thanks mainly to Spofforth's bowlinghe took 8 wickets for 3 runs'—the team were all out for 7 runs. About the same time, the "first batsman put up a record of 404 without the loss of a wicket. On 31st August last Sidcup sent the Bexleyans to right about for 3runs, two of which were byes!—it must however be stated that one batsman was absent.

When the last mail left five Yorkshiremen, Messrs Brown, Tunnicliffe, Moorehpuse, F. S. Jackson and Lord Hawke had all made over 1000 runs for the season, while'Denton, playing in first class cricket for the firstjtime, was credited-with 980 runs for the season, and with a month to go would certainly top the thousand. Both the above items are supposed to be " records." .

In the competition for the English County championship 74 centuries were scored as against 43. in 1893 and 25 in 1894. It must however be noted that five more counties competed in 1895 than in 1894. ' ' In two successive matches, Middlesex and Leicestershire, Briggs and Mold (Lancashire) bowled unchanged through both innings. • Briggs record was 9wkts.for 72 and 12 for 49/ while his companion took 8 for 78 and 8 for 97. , At their last meeting the delegates to registered playing members, to be resolved that season tickets be issued available on those days when they are not included in a contesting team. The price one shilling per ticket. Of course these tickets will not be available should a foreign team be playing.
