GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE.
Melbourne, August 10. [
At the V.R.O. Winter Meeting ihe chief event, the Grand National Steeplechase, resulted :-Diamio 1, Kom'sdal 2, Geometry 3- Fifteen started.. Betting: 2 to 1 against IWmio, 6 to 1 Batton, 10 to 1 Joe and Highborn; 12 to 1 Geometry,' and from 12 to 20 to 1 the others, Geometry was the first horse to break the line, but almost immediately Highborn l rushed to the front, nnd the latter, with' Dart and Knebswoitb, held a prominent position to .the straighr, where the favourite, who had bren fencing faultlessly, moved up. Daimio bad little difficulty in cuttirg down the leaders, and won easily by two lengths. Geometry was a length and a half behind the second horse, Higkborn, Gampaspe, and Songster were'lhe_on!y others'to finish, the remainder falling, but fortunately none of the jockeys were injured. Battou pulled up lame. Time, Bmins i6secs, which ia the record for-four miles.
